남부뉴저지통합한국학교, 감동과 아름다움으로 가득한 졸업 축제 <한인의 얼> 성료

남부뉴저지통합한국학교(이하 "학교")는 지난 5월 13일, 벌링턴카운티도서관 오디터리엄에서 졸업식과 문화예술제 '한인의 얼'을 개최했다. 학교는 2018년부터 재외동포재단의 맞춤형 지원금 후원으로 인턴교사제도를 운영해왔고, 이번에는 열 명의 졸업생을 배출했다. 이들은 한 해 동안 정식 급여를 받으며 책임을 맡아 학생들을 지도하는 인턴교사로서 성공적으로 임무를 수행했다.
행사는 오전 11시부터 남부뉴저지교회협의회 통합한국학교 담당 박종옥 목사의 기도로 시작되었으며, 김한들 회장과 양초원 총무, 활동 매니저 이예나가 진행을 맡아 졸업식이 진행되었다. 김정숙 교장의 환영사와 김문열 부이사장의 축사 이후, 강민희, 김경민, 권태연, 노종현, 신주현, 신지은, 신유찬, 심영서, 오세린, 이선재 졸업생들에게 졸업장이 수여되었다. 졸업생들은 축하를 받으며 졸업모를 던졌고, 개별적으로 졸업소감을 나누는 시간을 가졌다. 졸업생 중 12년간 한국학교를 다닌 신지은 학생은 '보조교사 인턴교사 시절 어린이들과 함께한 시간을 잊을 수 없을 것'이라고 말했고 한국무용단에서 수많은 공연봉사활동을 한 신주현 학생은 눈물을 글썽이며 말을 이어가지 못했다.
졸업식 후 2시부터는 지역주민들을 초청하여 문화예술제 '한인의 얼' 공연이 진행되었다. 이 공연에는 총 60명으로 구성된 예술단원을 포함하여 100여 명의 재학생들이 참여했다. 케이팝 댄스, 기원무, 삼고무, 설장구, 창작무 '작약지증', 부채춤, 모듬북, 플래시몹 등의 다채로운 한국문화예술을 선보였다. 지역주민들은 행사를 통해 짙은 역사의 풍미를 느낄 수 있었으며, 한국문화예술의 아름다움에 감탄했고, 정기공연 여부에 관심을 가진 주민들도 있었다.
2023-2024학년도 신학기는 9월 9일 개강한다. 학교 측은 수년간 한국전통문화예술단을 운영해온 노하우를 가지고 있으며, 신학기부터는 특화반을 개설하여 한국문화예술을 전문적으로 배울 수 있는 기회를 더 많은 학생들에게 제공한다고 밝혔다. 이에 따라 기존의 한국무용단, 모듬북단, 사물놀이단 외에 가야금 병창, 합창, 미술특화반이 신설될 예정이다. 이로써 1학년부터 6학년까지는 특화반 수업이 필수과정으로 포함되며, 7학년 이상 학생들은 선택과정으로 참여할 수 있게 된다. 학교는 이러한 변화를 통해 학생들에게 더 다양한 한국문화예술을 경험하고 습득할 수 있는 기회를 제공하고자 한다.
한편, 조선업계 전기기술 한인기업 유니카(법인장 신종민)는 남부뉴저지통합한국학교와 MOU협약을 체결하여, 뉴저지로 이주한 직원 자녀들이 모국의 언어와 문화를 잊지 않도록 한국학교 학비를 전액 지원할 것으로 결정했다. 김정숙 교장은 이를 한인기업과 한국학교의 상생파트너십으로 평가하며, 후세 교육에 큰 후원을 하는 의미 있는 시작이라고 강조했다. 또한, 앞으로도 기업체와의 협력관계를 지속적으로 확대할 것을 약속했다.

Korean School of Southern New Jersey Holds Graduation Ceremony and Cultural Arts Festival
The Korean School of Southern New Jersey ("KSSNJ") held its graduation ceremony and cultural arts festival, "Spirit of Korea," on May 13th at the Burlington County Library Auditorium. Since 2018, the school has been operating an intern teacher program with support from the Overseas Koreans Foundation, and this year, it proudly produced ten graduates. These interns successfully fulfilled their responsibilities as teachers, guiding the students.
The event commenced at 11 a.m. with a prayer by Reverend Jong-ok Park, who is the main contact person for KSSNJ from the South New Jersey Council of Churches. Following the welcoming address by Principal Chungsook Kim and a congratulatory speech by Vice Chairman Moon-yeol Kim, the graduates, Joell Kang, John Kim, Taeyeon Kwon, Zachary Noh, Sharon Oh, Audrey Shin, Ji-eun Shin, Ethan Lee, Christopher Shin, and Evangelin Shim, were awarded their graduation certificates. They were showered with congratulations, and each had a moment to share their thoughts on graduation. Jieun Shin, who attended the Korean school for 12 years, said, "I will never forget the time spent with the children as an intern teacher, and it was precious." Audrey Shin, who participated in numerous performances as a member of the K-Dance Company, was overcome with tears and could not continue her speech.
After the graduation ceremony, from 2 p.m., a cultural arts festival called "Spirit of Korea" was held, inviting local community residents. The event involved the participation of around 100 students, including a total of 60 performing artists. Diverse Korean cultural arts such as K-pop dance, prayer dance, samgomu (traditional percussion music), seoljanggu (hourglass drum), "Jakyakjijeung," fan dance, various folk dances, and flash mob were presented. The local residents were able to experience the richness of Korean history and were captivated by the beauty of Korean cultural arts. Some residents also expressed interest in regular performances.
The 2023-2024 academic year will begin on September 9th. KSSNJ has accumulated years of experience in operating Korean traditional cultural arts groups and has announced the establishment of three more specialized classes starting from the upcoming semester to provide more students with opportunities to professionally learn Korean cultural arts. In addition to the existing K-Dance Company, K-Percussion Company, and Samulnori, the school plans to introduce new classes such as gayageum (Korean zither) ensemble, choir, and art specialization. As a result, specialized class lessons will become mandatory for grades 1 to 6, while students in grade 7 and above can participate in elective courses.
Unika, a Korean company specializing in electrical technology in the shipbuilding industry, led by CEO Jongmin Shin, has entered into an MOU agreement with the KSSNJ. As part of the agreement, Unika has decided to fully support the tuition fees of children of its employees who have immigrated to New Jersey, ensuring that they do not forget their motherland's language and culture. Principal Chungsook Kim evaluates this partnership between Unika and the KSSNJ as a mutually beneficial collaboration, emphasizing its significant start in providing substantial support for future education. Furthermore, she promises to continue expanding this kind of cooperative relationship with other companies in the future.
